You Shall Go To The Ball – Ballgowns at the V&A

‘You shall go to the ball!’

That is what ‘the boy’ said to me this weekend. I’ve been dying to go to The Victoria and AlbertMuseum’s Ballgowns exhibition since it opened earlier this year and finally I had a free afternoon this weekend.

The exhibition focuses on British glamour from the 1950’s to the present day with over sixty stunning designs ranging from red carpet evening glamour to couture catwalk showstoppers.

Displayed over two floors, the ground floor features traditional ballgowns including the amazing ‘Elvis’ dress – a white Catherine Walker design embellished with pearls and with a collar to nuzzle at the chin –  which was worn by the elegant  Diana, Princess of Wales. There is also a spectacular Elizabeth Emanuel floral dress designed for Elizabeth Hurley to wear within an Estee Lauder Pleasures campaign in 1999.

The mezzanine floor showcases a selection of contemporary gowns by designers such as a Vivienne Westwood, Erdem, Mary Katrantzou and a personal favorite of mine, Alexander McQueen. Some of the dresses in this collection have been worn to red carpet events by celebrities such as Daphne Guinness, Sandra Bullock and Beyoncé.

This is a must see exhibition for any fashion lover!

The exhibition runs until 6th January 2013. While you are there you can also check out the rest of the newly renovated Fashion Galleries!
